Vaughan Baio Partner Jeffrey Oster was recently featured on the popular podcast, Latte with a Lawyer, where host Jonathan Brickman asked him a wide range of questions including how Jeff became a defense attorney (he actually fell into it as a result of loving a law school clerkship), his advice for students considering a legal career, and what it means to be known as an “aggressive litigator,” a moniker Jeff wears proudly.
When asked by Brickman what being an “aggressive litigator” means, Jeff explained that, for him, it’s his particular attention to detail and making sure no stone goes unturned. He pointed out that many attorneys follow the same steps regardless of the specific details of a case. Jeff, on the other hand, is exacting in conducting depositions, gathering and evaluating evidence, and using technology if and when it can save his clients a sizable payout.
Jeff also talked about the use of technology, including drones, CGI, and virtual mock trials-primarily in cases involving catastrophic injury or death. “Technology is amazing but expensive,” Jeff said honestly. He explained that it depends on the type of loss as to whether or not using the technology could ultimately be beneficial. However, with the most successful plaintiff’s firms using such technology regularly in cases where they expect a large payout, he has no hesitation in recommending these tools to his clients when necessary.
