Biography
Jane McGill brings 20 years of experience to her practice of workers’ compensation law as a defense attorney in Florida. Typically, her clients are self-insured organizations. As a workers’ compensation defense attorney, her responsibilities include providing ongoing comprehensive evaluation of cases with recommendations, negotiating settlements, handling litigation of claims to trial, and representing clients in the appeal of lower court decisions.
Examples of successfully litigated cases include a recent case where an injured worker was seeking continuing medical benefits for the compensable injuries. The Judge accepted the opinions of the client’s expert witnesses in finding that the injured worker was not entitled to the claimed medical benefits. In another case, the alleged injured worker claimed that the employer was timely put on notice of the accident and injury. The Judge, in denying the entire claim, accepted the testimony of the injured workers supervisors that the injured worker never provided notice of an accident and injury, which was consistent with medical records that were admitted into evidence. In an appellate case, the First District Court of Appeals reversed the lower court’s award of payment for kidney cancer treatment, finding that the lower court judge erred as a matter of law, because the injured worker never gave the employer an opportunity to accept or deny the cancer treatment before undergoing surgery.
Having obtained her undergraduate degree in education from Florida International University in Miami, Jane taught elementary and middle school students in the Palm Beach County school district. After leaving teaching, Jane was a co-owner of a State Farm Insurance Agency in Boca Raton, Florida for eight years. In 1995, Jane changed course and decided to pursue a career as a lawyer. She earned her Juris Doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law in Davie, Florida. She worked as a certified legal intern for the Florida State Attorney’s office during her last year of law school. Jane does pro bono work in the area of family and probate law by helping client with simple divorces, drafting of wills and filing the necessary pleadings to distribute a deceased relative’s estate.
